This is a recent portrait commission that I finished. Look familiar? He is. You guessed it, this is a childhood picture of my husband.

New Zealand rap artist, Larz Randa (Mainard Larken) is totally “hot like tiger balm.” I’ve got mad respect for Randa’s androgynous style, endless smile, funk, quirk, and sense of humor. Check out the song Rangers and prepare to be hooked.
A few months ago I stumbled onto this video blog called Makayla’s Vanity. Makayla candidly opens herself up to the world by sharing her thoughts and ideas on youtube. She covers everything from her pixie-cut to bigger topics like being yourself and being confident in your own skin. From watching her videos I feel sure that she is adorable, thoughtful, and sweet. When I was 16 I had my own pixie-cut and my thoughts about life were all crammed in the pages of a journal that I did my best to hide. And that’s part of why I think Makayla’s vlog is so great. She’s not hiding, she’s sharing her herself and her insights with us as she grows. For many I think she’s probably a friend from afar. For me she’s an inspiring example of transparency. So this illustration is for you Makayla! Stay beautiful!
My hubby and I recently went to see the movie Her. I really enjoyed it. It was really beautifully done. And it touched on aspects of relationships that most movies gloss over or leave out entirely. The character Theodore Twombly was absolutely love-able. And so I decided to illustrate him and share it with you.
Disclaimer, I will sound unusually fan-girlish in this post. But allow me to tell you… I find Esther Quek’s fashion sensibilities inspiring. She embodies something that I’ve always tried to implement in my own sense of fashion. Her sense of somewhat androgynous clothing is powerfully dandy with it’s ties, snappy suits and coats. But that’s not all, her use of color, texture and shape is remarkable. The way she pairs her pieces shows her natural sense for fashion that is much larger than the trend grabbing fashion of so many. This picture of her emulates what I’m talking about. I’m not a purple person, but she creates a rich palette in this outfit, that even I can appreciate, ranging from deep petunia to plumb. The drape of each layer creates a gorgeous silhouette while the various cuts and textures create visual interest. And thus, I was inspired to illustrate it and share it with you. Cheers, Esther, stay stylish!
My darling husband Shane made a lovely new video featuring my illustration!

The end of March was full of pet sketches. Today I’m finishing up the last sketch from my March special. If you’re curious, this is how my one of my completed sketches compares to the photo I was given.
It was my pleasure to capture the glint in Rowan’s friendly eyes. His parents commissioned a personal illustration of him to commemorate his first birthday. He seemed to be always on the verge of smiling, what a charmer!
This beautiful mime dance routine by Dana wilson, inspired me to do a vector illustration for animation dancing practice.
This is my first commission of a child.
Beautiful little Nora was easy to draw with her thoughtful gaze, her merry cheeks, and her bright red hair.
A big thanks to her parents for letting me share this personal piece with you.
